One privilege of membership in a Mess is the ability of a mess member to host/sponsor private functions (e.g. weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, Christmas parties, meetings) in the Mess in support of or on behalf of immediate family members (e.g. spouses, partners, parents, siblings) or in support of another association to whom the Mess member belongs (e.g. Rotary Club, Naval Officers’ Association) and which has a traditional association with the Military community.  Additionally, this host/sponsor must be present at the function.  This issue in particular can be a sensitive one with local businesses, as some see this aspect of Mess privilege as competing with their facilities.  While the position of membership privilege can be defended within the context of what is described above, it cannot be defended in a situation whereby a Mess might be a venue for a private function that either has no relationship to the sponsoring Mess member, or that relationship is too distant (e.g. your spouse’s, cousin’s, aunt).  

Mess Staff and PMCs are the final gate-keepers of who utilizes the facility and who does not, and as such are obligated to vet all requests for use of the Mess for private functions accordingly.  Our goal is to maintain Mess facilities for the use of its members in a way that can co-exist with the local business community.
